Cycling is a great way to get outdoors, get exercising and explore the beautiful area that surrounds us here in Neath Port Talbot. Right on our doorstep, you’ll find a range of safe cycle routes that are ideal for family cycling holidays or just a day exploring the Welsh valleys. They range from disused railway lines to peaceful canal towpaths.

Rheilffordd Trail

Start - Forest Road

Trail stats

Distance: 20 km
Time: 2 hrs
Grade - Gentle

This gentle trail follows the wide, flat route of an old railway track that once carried passengers and coal the length of the valley.

There are two lengths of trail to follow: 22.5 km or 16km that link the communities of Pontrhydyfen with Blaengwynfi and Glyncorrwg via Cymer and it’s a great way to explore the Afan Valley.

The Cwm Tawe Trail

The Cwm Tawe Cycle Path forms part of the National Cycle Network Route 43, which takes you through the heart of the Swansea Valley from Trebanos to Ystalyfera. This riverside route starts in Trebanos and passes through the picturesque town of Pontardawe before heading north to Ystalyfera.

Afan Valley

Start - Route 47

Starting in Aberavon the route winds northwards, conveniently linking up with Port Talbot Bus and Train stations and the Shopping Centre. It then goes on to a pretty woodland riverside path, skimming the old mining communities of Cwmafan and Pontrhydyfen and the start of Afan Forest Park.
